Most people searching electrical panel upgrade Fort Lauderdale already know something is wrong or about to be: a Level 2 charger that will not fit the ampacity, a generator quote that assumes spare capacity, a fuse box an insurer just photographed, or a breaker that trips every time the dryer and the second AC run together. Two jobs get sold as “panel upgrade.” A like-for-like box swap keeps the same amperage. A service change moves the drop, often 100 to 200 amp, with new conductors, grounding, inspection, and a utility disconnect/reconnect. A “200-amp panel” on a 100-amp drop is still a 100-amp house.
When do I actually need an electrical panel upgrade in Fort Lauderdale?
You need the upgrade when the service or the enclosure cannot safely carry what you already run or what you are about to add. Warm cover plates, flicker, and a panel with no spare slots are clues. They are not, by themselves, a diagnosis.
The triggers we see most on Fort Lauderdale and Broward jobs:

- Standby generator. Transfer switch plus the loads you actually want in a storm. Treating it as a weekend add-on to a packed panel is how backfeeds and undersized services happen, see generator installation.
- Aluminum branch circuits or an old fuse box. Mid-1960s to early-1970s houses often still have aluminum terminations that oxidize and heat, or a fuse cabinet with no path to modern breakers and AFCI/GFCI protection.
- Insurance / sale pressure. Carriers and home inspectors flag Federal Pacific / hazard-brand panels, rusted meter cans, double-tapped lugs, and missing grounding electrodes. Replacement can be a safety job even when amperage stays the same.
- Remodel load. Kitchen, spa, heat-pump water heater, or a second condenser on a 100-amp drop that was never meant to carry it.
We open the panel, look at the mast and meter, run the load calc, and lock the scope before the cover stays off. We do not talk anyone into a whole-house rewire on sight when a targeted fix is enough, and we do not call a box swap a service upgrade.
Do I need a permit and inspection for a panel upgrade in Fort Lauderdale / Broward?
Yes for a real panel change or service change. SoFlo Electrical Co. pulls the electrical permit with the City of Fort Lauderdale Building Services, or with whichever Broward municipality has jurisdiction for your address (Hollywood, Pompano Beach, unincorporated Broward, and the rest each run their own counter). Inspection is part of the job. When the service conductors or meter change, we also coordinate the utility disconnect and reconnect so the drop actually matches the new ampacity.
A like-for-like enclosure swap and a 100-to-200 service upgrade ride different scopes on the same permit path. Neither is a no-permit weekend job. HOA or condo meter rooms add a third clock: access windows and building-manager sign-off. Tell us that on the first call so the permit and the utility window are not fighting a locked door.
What is the difference between a main breaker upgrade and a full panel upgrade?
People use “main breaker upgrade” when they mean “make it 200 amp.” Those are not the same sentence.
- Main breaker only. Swap the main if the bus, enclosure, and service conductors are still rated and in good condition. On older Fort Lauderdale stock that path is uncommon, the bus or the can is usually the weak link.
- Full panel (enclosure) upgrade. New can, new breakers, correct grounding and bonding, room for the circuits you actually have. Amperage may stay the same when the job is safety or insurance-driven.
- Service upgrade. New panel plus the work that changes what the utility delivers, often meter, mast, service conductors, and grounding to current code, then disconnect/reconnect.
If someone quotes a “200-amp panel” without touching the drop, ask what the meter and the service conductors are rated for. We size it on site and put the number in writing before we kill the main. How long is the house without power during a panel upgrade?
Plan on a daytime outage measured in hours, not a fifteen-minute flip. A like-for-like panel swap is often same-day once the utility has cleared the disconnect. A service upgrade that needs a new meter or mast waits on the utility reconnect window as well as our labor, that window is theirs, not ours, and we schedule around it instead of guessing.
What that means in the house:
- Refrigerators and freezers stay closed; they hold longer than people expect if you do not open them.
- Medical devices, CPAP, aquariums, sump pumps, and home offices need a plan before we pull the meter.
- We will not kill the main until you are ready and the quote is locked.
- Burning smell, sparking, or a main that will not reset is a different queue, that is 24/7 emergency work, not a scheduled upgrade.
What should I do to prep before the crew arrives?
Homeowner prep is access and priorities. We handle permit, inspection, and utility coordination.
- Clear the path to the meter and the panel, garage clutter, bikes, locked side gates.
- Bring pets in. Tell us about dogs that own the yard.
- List circuits that cannot stay dark long: medical, fridge with medicine, office VPN, aquarium, lift.
- If the meter sits in a condo or HOA room, have the manager contact and any access code ready.
- Photograph the open panel (cover off, breakers readable) if we ask before the visit, it speeds the load conversation.

Will an EV charger or generator force a panel upgrade?
Not always, but often on older Broward services. If a real load calculation shows spare capacity after the continuous EV load or the generator transfer design, we run the dedicated 240-volt circuit (or set the transfer equipment) and leave the service alone. If it does not, stacking a 50-amp charger onto a full 100-amp panel is how you buy the upgrade twice, once as a “charger install” and again when the main starts opening under load.
Generator work adds storm-season math: whole-house vs critical loads, pad, automatic transfer switch, and electrical permit/inspection. Gas piping is coordinated, not guessed from the electrical side. Portable inlets and interlock kits are the smaller path when a standby set is not in the budget, still permitted work, still not a dryer-outlet backfeed.
